Group Treatment
CJR's residential program incorporates a group treatment approach called Positive Group Interaction (PGI). PGI promotes positive decision making, responsibility, and behavior in the individual and the group by constructively channeling adolescent influence in peer relationships.
Group meetings are a critical part of the treatment process, and all boys meet in daily one-hour sessions with their peers and a trained group leader. Issues relating to each boy's goals are discussed with the expectation that group members must "give help to receive help." Members of the group are expected to support, and to be accountable for, the commitments made during these meetings.
Individual Counseling
At CJR, individual counseling is focused on helping youth identify their strengths, benefit from the PGI program and resolve problems. Counseling also provides each boy with a resource for encouragement, assistance in evaluating the consequences of his actions, and for functioning constructively after returning to his home, school and community.
A Primary Counselor is assigned to every boy at the time of admission. This staff member guides each youth in developing goals and monitors the youngster's progress in all areas of the program throughout the duration of treatment.
Family Services and After-Care
Families are respected and essential partners with CJR and are critical in each boy's treatment process. Family services and after-care help a boy become successful when he returns to his home community. A trained family worker meets with each family at admission to complete a joint assessment and plan. They then meet regularly throughout the residential treatment process with every boy and his family to work through identified issues and improve communication between youth and their parents.
After-care provides a continuum of support for a minimum of six months following discharge from the Residential Program. Services include a wide range of advocacy on behalf of the youth, family therapy, individual counseling, close communication with the boy's school and assistance in accessing community resources and employment.
Clinical and Medical Services
Psychiatric - All boys have complete psychiatric examinations as a
part of admission to the program. Additional services are provided as needed. Psychiatric staff play an ongoing role in providing staff training and consultation.
Psychological - A psychologist conducts intellectual and personality assessments for boys as needed, and consultation for staff.
Medical - A modern, well-equipped infirmary staffed by a nurse from 8:00 AM-9:30 PM, 7 days a week, is located on campus and supervised by a consulting physician. Medical and dental services are provided by specialists as needed.
Campus Activities
CJR's extensive athletic and recreational activities program is designed to help boys develop a wide variety of constructive skills and interests. Structured learning experiences offer challenges, while providing each participant with opportunities to experience the benefits of teamwork and achieve success. The activities curriculum is integrated with other areas of the treatment program to reinforce positive behavior.
In competitive athletics, boys learn to cope with pressure while developing social and motor skills. Outdoor adventures, such as backpacking, caving and camping, teach each boy that he can achieve in a new environment. Participation in special interest clubs encourages the development of constructive hobbies that may be continued after discharge from the CJR program.
